When many people think of Israel, it is often in terms of modern war or ancient religion. But there is much more to the Jewish state than missiles and prayers. In his debut as a documentary filmmaker, entrepreneur and political columnist Michael Lucas examines a side of Israel that is too often overlooked: its thriving gay community.

Under the Same Sun

The film is a mockumentary set in the near future, and it looks back on how peace was made in 2013 between Israel and Palestine. It is the story of two businessmen - one Palestinian and one Israeli - who struggle to set up a solar energy company. Both come from societies where there is strong opposition to cooperating with the other, and the film tells how they overcome hostility from within their own families and from the people around them.

A Queer Country

Israel is governed by Orthodox civil law and yet hosts the world's biggest gay pride. Is this a cynical marketing ploy or a political awakening? A Queer Country explores the development of Israel's buzzing LGBTQ community in Tel Aviv and the true story of how it came into being.
